There's always going to be someone out there who doesn't like the choices you make. Some of those people will have issue from what they feel is a valid place. Sometimes their concerns are valid. But a lot of people like to judge others because it makes them feel better about themselves. Because they've got nothing else to do with their time, they've got nothing else going for them. They're miserable and want everyone else to be as miserable as they are.
You can't please the world. Trust me, it's never going to happen. Regardless of how safe you play something, there is going to be a voice saying you're doing something wrong.
So do what you feel is best. Do what makes you happy. Stay informed. Use the care necessary.
You're 18. You're entitled to certain privileges at this age. You should enjoy them, not worry about them.

One of the most popular sicknesses among goldfish that I know of is white spot disease, commonly called ich (said like "ick" and it is an icky parasite). If you're not familiar with them, you can take pictures or the tank itself to a vet. Or just call, most likely. There's other ails goldfish can come down with but that's a common one.
If I were you, if you wanted to try again, I'd do a very thorough cleaning of the tank first. Use hot water, maybe salt, sterilize it before you give it a new inhabitant.
