Both not accepting tips (why would he, personally, when he could ask for something else later on that would be of more value) and it not being a big deal whether or not she wins. April would sign him up for this sort of thing and hopefully not have a concern in her head about his fidelity if he ended up going to another bidder. He wouldn't have concerns about her. If anything truly insane happened, they would have something to talk about later. A date that's won is different from a date that's wanted.

[ a hospital, one of abigail's least favorite places. it's easy to guess why she didn't want to be involved in that aspect of the charity event. especially on a pediatric floor, full of children who are the common culprits of pointing out her scar with their wide eyes and sticky little fingers. maybe it would be different in a hospital, surrounded by familiar plastic bracelets and egg shaped bald heads, but abigail isn't itching to test that out. ]

It's kind of sweet, little selfless kid whose last wish is to bring the joy of Christmas to someone else before he dies.

[ her nose wrinkles. she is not a completely uncaring harpy, she does mean that. it is sweet. but she dislikes christmas, possibly more than thanksgiving, and she can't always tone down the bah humbug in her soul. her mom probably had gifts stashed away in their house, but it's not like abigail got to keep those when the house was sold. maybe they sold all the gifts too, she can't be sure. but christmas is synonymous with family and abigail can't help being reminded that she doesn't have one. it puts a damper on family holidays, being an orphan. ]

Act like he has no intention of doing anything related to it and then when he shows up claim he was just in town. Not checking in on Abigail, no. He doesn't need to shadow her every step. He doesn't want to.

Oh God. Sweet. Selfless. Holiday spirit bullshit. Will pulls out the roll of receipt paper from the machine, too little to print anything out on and in need of changing, and tosses it into the trash can behind him with less oomph than everything else that came before it.]

[ still on her tiptoes, she lifts one foot to rest against the back of her calf, like a lazy ballerina or a bird about to take flight. her shoulders lift in a shrug as she tips her head to watch him. something is off, but she can't put her finger on it so after a few moments of study and let's it go. ]

It's holiday themed. If I go to this I can say I did something festive and no one can try to drag me to anything else.

Why would he try to nurture away from Abigail achieving too much independence in the face of all the knowledge about where she's had to stand with having no choice?
