Grew up in boatyards, so a lot of it's leftover from that. Books at the library filled me in on more. I took marine biology in college just because.
I don't mean to sound like a crotchety old grouch, but I've never found anything on TV that I couldn't find in books or by listening to someone who knew what they were talking about.
I do admit that certain children's TV is good. Like Sesame Street.

I watch two shows regularly now, because of who works on them, and whatever April wants to watch.
Why? Do you have it? Is it that good?

And yeah it's worth it! I'll lend you the DVDs I got some for Christmas. I mean technically you could read about it but TV's the only way you're actually going to be able to see it in motion. It's a lot cooler that way

I actually didn't know a bunch of them before we decided to spend the next 24/7 in a car together but they all turned out to be pretty cool so. I guess we're road tripping right!

Just don't take any wooden nickels, pick up any scraggly hitchhikers, and always make sure whoever's driving is in good condition.

[Because it's more important that whoever's driving both knows how to drive and is in a good frame of mind for that. No booze, no drugs, no sleepiness. Even if that means the only person up to driving doesn't have a license.

It's just another way of saying don't let yourself get cheated. Don't buy any bridges, and all that.
I don't think there's a definitive origin for it, but I've heard it all my life.
Suppose the ghost story is that whoever started it is very very dead now.
